1 Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.
How many times do we find ourselves in places of ‘disaster’? Sometimes those difficult times can be small and short-lived, other times they seem monumental and everlasting. Whatever the case, the best place to be when we go through struggles of any kind is in the shadow of God’s wings, so to speak. Someone once reminded me that if we are in the shadow of anything, we are in a dark place, but God wants to prove to us that He is a refuge for us.
2 I cry out to God Most High, to God, who fulfills his purpose for me.
God loves it when we cry out to him, just as I love it when my children call out to me. And He is able to fulfill his purpose for us because He is God Most High.
3 He sends from heaven and saves me, rebuking those who hotly purse me; God sends his love and his faithfulness.
There have been times in my life when I feel like troubles ‘hotly pursue me’. Looking back, I can say now that God’s love and faithfulness have always been with me, even when I have had to go through difficulties.
4 I am in the midst of lions; I lie among ravenous beasts- men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.
The feeling of being alone, criticized, vulnerable, rejected, mocked, harassed, abandoned…
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.
The psalmist knew where to turn! Praising God in the middle of whatever it is we are going through makes a way for us. After all, He is God of all the earth, the universe, everything!
6 They spread a net for my feet- I was bowed down in distress. They dug a pit in my path- but they have fallen into it themselves.
We may feel like the world is against us, but when we trust God, He will get us through.
7 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music.
God can quiet our restless hearts and put music back into our souls.
8 Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.
How good it is when we get to the place where we can wake up and ‘meet God’. Our thoughts are on Him, and we take time to worship Him, meditate on His Word, and be still before Him. What a way to start the day!
9 I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples.
I loved worshipping in churches when I lived overseas. I could look around at people from all over the world and rejoice in the fact that God is King over ALL the earth, not just my little corner of the US!
10 For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.
